ESQUIRE: Things are good. SCOTT CAAN: Yeah. ESQ: Twelve million people. SC: I think something like that. ESQ: Did you expect this? SC: With the hype and everything, I think ultimately we expected the show to do even better. ESQ: You sound disappointed. Are you worried about getting picked up? Seems if Outsourced gets picked up, then you have a good shot. [It's since been picked up. —Editors] SC: If what? ESQ: Outsourced. SC: I don't know what that is. ESQ: What made you decide to do Hawaii Five-0? SC: I read the pilot and I'm like, This has promise and isn't stupid. This is some of the best stuff I'll be able to have done. ESQ: Better than your movies? SC: I'm kind of like the goofy number-seven guy in a lot of movies. So I say yes [to doing the show], then the anxiety starts. I'm like, What have I done? And I go crazy because I fancy myself a tortured artist. I'm the guy who'll be in the one-bedroom with the coffee and a cigarette. And I don't smoke. ESQ: No offense, but have you ever had to live in a one-bedroom? You've had a relatively charmed life. SC: No. I'm just saying I don't want to sell out. I want to struggle and make films. It's not a financial thing, it's more of a who-I-am thing. I'm glad that you said that because now I'm in a place where I'm like, What an asshole I would be not to ride the wave and be appreciative. ESQ: Is making a TV show harder than making a movie? SC: We're making an hour every single week. It feels like I'm constantly doing an independent movie that we didn't prepare for. ESQ: But you're in Hawaii. SC: I'm a malcontent when it comes to art. I don't want to sound pretentious, but you could hire a bunch of monkeys to be on a TV show, and if it's successful, then everything's perfect and everybody's happy. But when you hire people that give a shit and they want to make good art — I don't want to say art and TV show in the same sentence because I sound like a jerkoff — you're going to have unhappy people, because they want to make it better. ESQ: How would you make the show better? SC: If it was up to me, if I had the reins, I'd try to do an episode where there's no case. ESQ: They do seem to have the formula down: Throw you guys in a weird situation, something crazy happens, and then your partner says, "Book 'im, Danno." SC: Simplify it some more so I can jump out a window. ESQ: Did you worry that as an actor — sorry, artist — people wouldn't respect you as much if you were on TV? SC: Does that sound pretentious? ESQ: No, I'm an artist, too. SC [laughing]: You pretentious fuck. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. My dad talked about it with me when he did his show [Las Vegas]. He was like, "Are they going to not respect me?" Are you nuts? Because you want to take care of your family? And that's where I'm at — I don't even have a family, and so I struggled with, well, why I am doing this now? And the answer was because, dude, when someone throws you a fastball down the middle, hit that shit. [Caan leans back and bumps his hand against a post.] SC: Ow. Fuck. ESQ: You all right? SC: No. I have something [on my hand] and just banged it. ESQ: Your dad never would have said that. SC: Said "Ow"? No, no chance. I'm sensitive, dude. ESQ: That surprises me, because I was a little intimidated coming into this. You always play such a hard-ass. SC: Here's the thing: I've always fancied myself a tough guy. I grew up scrappy. Ultimately, I think that's a little bit of a front that I had no choice but to follow. ESQ: Because of your dad? SC: My dad's genuinely one of the toughest people on the planet. He wasn't playing that part. That's him. If I cried about something, it wasn't "Hey, stop crying." It was "What is that? What are you doing?" ESQ: What's with slicking back your hair all the time? SC: I watched The Outsiders when I was 12, and I was like, That's who I want to be. ESQ: You know, I wouldn't be as scared of you if you had a different haircut. SC: The only other things I've ever done are shave my head bald and wear a Mohawk. [My hair] just wants to go back. ESQ: Do you think this is your time as an actor? You have a different appeal than the current breed of guys out there. You're not like Robert Pattinson. SC: Who? ESQ: Robert Pattinson. The vampire guy. The Twilight guy. SC: I don't know who he is. ESQ: But you get my point? SC: I feel like I would have been more successful 30 years ago, because I think what people are interested in has changed. But are you saying doing television? ESQ: No, not at all. Just your personality, your look, what you bring to a role, it's really different from new actors in general. SC: I'm going to take that as a compliment. ESQ: It is. Do you get in fights anymore? SC: If I get in a fight at 35, I'm going to be pissed. I'm at art functions and charity parties. It's not like I'm hanging out at the Tunnel and shit. ESQ: Which of us do you think has cried the most recently? SC: I guarantee it's me. ESQ: I'm having trouble thinking of the last time I cried. I should've prepared better for that question. SC: In the last few weeks not so much, but in the last year... The Appendix: How to Photograph Naked Women, by Scott Caan Nine tips gleaned from our conversation with actor Scott Caan: 1. Temporarily reside in a hotel. 2. Date an uninhibited artist type. 3. When she asks you "How come you never take photos of me?" say, "It's just not my thing." 4. When she insists, take out your camera. 5. Use any available light. Use the hotel-room lamp if you have to. 6. Pick the right pose. "The idea is to come up with something that you find beautiful. Sometimes something raunchy is something beautiful to somebody, but to me, that's not it." 7. Don't force it. "Anything you shoot photos of, it's what you keep in the frame. You look at something, and if you really want to take a photo of it, take a photo of it. The second you start adjusting things and making it work, that's when it becomes photography as a job, and that's just not my style." 8. Call ten female acquaintances and ask them, "Hey, can I shoot photos of you?" 9. Repeat process with each.

— After Making Peace with His Famous Father, the Actor 'Books 'Em' as Danno on Fall's Hottest New Show For someone who loves surfing as much as Scott Caan does, working on a show like Hawaii Five-0-which shoots eight months a year on location on Oahu-should be a dream. Sadly for Caan, physical pursuits have lately been more of a nightmare. "I had a pretty gnarly knee surgery after I snapped my anterior cruciate ligament in August, so I've been out of the water for a while," Caan says over coffee on the mainland. Showing off a variety of scars, from his ankles to his shoulders, the actor confesses, "My whole body is a wreck. I've injured myself so many times with jujitsu, skateboarding, football. I guess I like to live hard." It's not surprising, considering Scott, 34, is the son of legendary Hollywood tough guy James Caan (The Godfather, Misery) and spent much of his unconventional childhood inside the walls of the Playboy Mansion where his father, now 70, briefly lived. "I'd have Scott bring me girls," James recalls with a laugh. "No one could say no to a cute little boy." Before long Scott had decided to follow in his father's footsteps; parts in hit movies like Ocean's Eleven followed. Now his rough-and-tumble rep is paying off with his role as cop Danny "Danno" Williams on CBS' hit reboot of the '70s cop drama Hawaii Five-0. "My character's a tough guy from New Jersey. I can't exactly wear a dress, you know?" Scott says, laughing. The actor says he's not a macho man himself. "I'm actually very sensitive," he swears. Earlier this year he wrote and starred in Mercy, an indie film about a troubled relationship. His creative streak is largely inspired by his father, whom Scott calls "one of the greatest actors of all time." Despite his admiration, though, Scott is clear: "To say our relationship wasn't dysfunctional would be a lie." Raised by his mother, model Sheila Ryan, after his parents split when he was a baby, Scott "witnessed a lot of things I wish I didn't do," James confesses now. "He saw me when I was a little rough around the edges," including periods when James was battling drugs. "Now," says James, "we're really best buddies." Scott doesn't hold a grudge. "I have no resentment. He made mistakes that affected him-and me-but he's always been there for me no matter what." Adds James: "I'm proud that he's grown up so well." Perhaps because of his turbulent youth, Scott consciously avoids the same Hollywood pitfalls his dad experienced, noting that beyond a brief experimentation with drugs as a teen, he avoided substances and alcohol entirely for 14 years. "I'm not a nightclub guy at all," he says. "I wake up at 5 a.m. every day and go to bed early." While his friends, including his Entourage costars (he has a recurring role on the HBO comedy as talent manager Scott Lavin), are often out on the Hollywood scene, Scott prefers to stay home and write scripts-ideally ones that could star his father. "If I can see him happy, working, and be responsible for it, that will make me happy for the rest of my life," he says. But his grueling 12-hour days shooting Hawaii leave little time for creativity-or love. "I want to get married, but I'm always tortured in relationships," says Scott, who previously dated Kimberly Stewart. "There are 6 billion people in the world. It's hard to find the one person who's right for you." So for now, he's just enjoying his newfound "Book 'em, Danno" success. "I caught a wave," says the frustrated surfer. "I've got to ride it." — Scott Caan Rises to the Occasion SECOND-GENERATION ACTOR SCOTT CAAN is not the typical Hollywood product. That is, unlike the “trend” today, he hasn’t risen to the tabloids by tarnishing the reputation and legacy of his famous father (James Caan of The Godfather, etc.). Rather, he’s living up to it. At 35 years of age he’s the star of a weekly television show shot entirely on O’ahu. He surfs, rides motorcycles and has a girlfriend-and a dog named Dot. The only thing he doesn’t have is a lack of charisma. Lounging on the lanai of his two-story, Mediterranean-style house nestled on the slopes of Diamond Head, we’re chatting about his role on the final season of Entourage-the HBO show about making it big in Hollywood. Caan’s personal Entourage moment came in 1995, after landing the lead role in a film titled A Boy Called Hate, which centered on a kid recently released from juvenile hall before shooting someone. The character embarks on a cross-country motorcycle escapade with a girl, running from the law, and eventually saving her life. It was his “James Dean moment,” he shares. (He casually mentions beating out Joaquin Phoenix for the role.) “I didn’t know if I wanted to be an actor, the guy holding a light, if I wanted to push the dolly, if I wanted to shoot or if I wanted to write. I was just like, ‘This is home. Whatever this is, whoever these people are, this group of misfits, from the grips to the writers.’ They seemed like my kind of people. I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Caan professes. And while this might echo a likely Hollywood story, the action leading up to his foray on stage was not from any familiar playbook. Caan was just one year old when his parents divorced (his mother, Sheila Ryan, was also an actress). His father-whose macho persona and sharp-tongued wit certainly found their way into Scott Caan’s genetic makeup-though already famous, was a very present father to Scott and his younger siblings. In fact, from the time Caan was 5 to 15 years of age, the elder Caan endured a potentially career-killing hiatus, solely to raise his kids. He certainly wasn’t above coaching Little League, by any stretch. While his father was always supportive, it wasn’t enough to keep him from the more subversive trends of the ’80s. At 13, he connected with local California kids he wanted to emulate. “I hung out with kids that I thought were interesting, and they just happened to be hoodlums, B-boys, criminals, skaters and surfers,” Caan admits, even delving into all facets of the “pakalolo” lifestyle. Before long, he traded football, baseball and basketball for skating, dancing and surfing. The elder Caan wasn’t understanding. “‘What are you doing?’ he would say to me. ‘You don’t skateboard, there’s no team. You don’t surf!’ But I was instantly drawn in. It was something you did in your own way. It was creative self-expression,” Caan says, adding: “Back then, it was punk to surf and skate. It was its own little culture. Today, 6-year-old girls from Brentwood get surfboards for their birthdays. It’s not like it used to be.” Perhaps identifying with kids from broken homes in search of belonging to something, anything, Caan was hooked. Soon, he was hanging tough with Alan Maman (aka The Alchemist, who currently works as a DJ for Eminem). The duo began writing rap lyrics, even putting together a demo album. Before long (and thanks to a connection with legendary music producer Quincy Jones Jr.) the pair was sitting in Ice Cube’s office. “I was like, ‘This is the coolest thing ever,'” Caan says, however, admitting that things “didn’t quite go according to plan” shortly thereafter. Caan and Maman, dubbed The Whooliganz (a YouTube search will reveal a very interesting few minutes of video footage), set out on tour with Cypress Hill and House of Pain. Caan was 16 years old. “It’s still the best time of my life.” Here on the set of Hawaii Five-0-where Caan plays the lead role of Danny “Danno” Williams along with special agent Steve McGarrett (Aussie actor Alex O’Loughlin)-Caan is thrilled to talk about the film Mercy, which he wrote and appeared in alongside his father. Yet again, the development process wasn’t something that fell in Caan’s lap, as most might presume. Following the lack of success with The Whooliganz, then a few roles in early ’90s films like Last Resort and Nowhere, Caan signed up with Playhouse West, a theatre group in North Hollywood where his mom had studied years earlier. He immersed himself alongside rising stars such as James Franco and Ashley Judd, who would write scenes on a weekly basis, and perform them on the weekend. Around this time something became clear to him; that the sharp-tongued, macho persona so eloquently exemplified by his father was also a nice fit for himself. He sold a few scripts, one of which-2003’s Dallas 363-he completed in only three weeks. A “guys’ actor” with a soft core, Caan is involved in charity work with various organizations to help children, mainly through sports. Here, on set, he remains focused and intense, yet very polite and somehow offbeat. Off-set, he’s an admitted chain-smoker, and never parts company from “my only inseparable companion,” he states with a wink, nodding toward his trusty dog, Dot. “I still don’t know if I want to be an actor forever,” he waxes. “There are a lot of other things I want to do, and it never feels like it’s enough.” But acting is in his blood. He’s received commendations for his work in the Ocean’s trilogy, and cites George Clooney as one someone he greatly respects. Back at his Diamond Head pad, we notice no shortage of cameras around. It turns out, photography-another creative outlet inspired by a gift from his dad-is another passion of Caan’s. In 2004, he decided to do a one-man show of his work, on his birthday, at a friend’s clothing store called Kingsbury, in L.A. He showed 10 prints; the next year, he returned with 20. In 2009, he collected his best images and released the coffee table book, Scott Caan Photographs Vol. 1. “Photography is one of my favorite things because I don’t care about what it’s supposed to look like,” he says emphatically. “When you write something, 30 people are going to give you their opinions, and then you have to rewrite it. You direct something and everybody has an opinion. You produce something, it’s even worse. As an actor, you have a director telling you how to do it. Me and that thing [the camera], we’re just out there doing it. If I see a photo, and I like the way it looks, I’m going to print it.” Following this thread of effortless rebellion, can’t-cage-me recklessness (albeit controlled), Caan is even more fanatical about surfing and motorcycles. “There’s something about the show-off side of surfing-it’s not as fun if someone didn’t see you do it,” he smirks, walking us down to see his cherished 1960 Panhead motorcycle, as well as Alaia, a traditional wooden surfboard that is no stranger to South Shore breaks, with Caan on top of it. “When you surf, nobody is on your back, nobody is telling you what to do. Now, I have changed-but my love for surfing is still there. That’s what I love about being in this series, living in Honolulu,” Caan says, readying to take Alaia for a paddle. “Working with a wonderful guy like Alex O’ Loughlin, life is good. We get along very well, we’re similar in a lot of ways. We have a lot to talk about off camera.” Life in Hawai’i seems to appeal to him beyond the break, so to speak. “There’s such a calming element, you rarely meet people who are walking around frustrated. For me, it is a completely new sensation. In the beginning, it was almost uncomfortable,” he adds, sounding a bit like his New Jersey Five-0 character, who insists on wearing dress shirts and ties on duty. “I’m used to being stressed out all the time, and feeling OK with it. But here you start to see life in a different perspective … in a relaxed way. The second I come off the plane and breathe this air I get immediately calm. This is good,” he says, almost as if he’s still trying to convince himself of the notion. Feeling as though we’ve made significant headway during our conversation, we ventured to ask Caan how his father feels about Hawaii Five-0. “At first he told me not to do it. He’s always honest with me,” Caan confesses. “Today, he watches an episode and says, ‘It was great,’ and then he sees another episode and says, ‘That really sucked!’ My father always taught me to do something in the best possible way, or don’t do it at all.” Caan still misses his life in Los Angeles. “The hustling in L.A., that energy, the feeling I have when I’m home and I just go, ‘What’s next, what’s the next job?’ I miss that. But commuting between O’ahu and L.A., I think this is a great balance for me.” Regarding his longevity in the series, an earlier conversation resonates: “I hate simple, the same (stuff) every day. I can’t imagine how I ended up on a TV show. You know? Talk about repetitive,” Caan says. However, as he walks across Kapi’olani Park toward Tongs surf break with Alaia in hand, a car full of young people slows down just enough to snap photos and offer words of praise to the young actor (“You’re one of us now, buddy-a local!” one says, before the car careens out of site). If he does in fact aim to live up to the bar his father set, it’s easy to see that Scott Caan is well on his way. About the Setting: For this issue’s cover story, we went with a bit of a vintage feel. It helped that actor Scott caan’s own personal style is a dapper mix of swagger and retro. When HILuxury was offered the rare chance to photograph on ‘Iolani Palace grounds, we jumped at the opportunity. here, we were able to showcase this historic property in a new light, with “Danno” of the Hawaii Five-0 redux running down the steps of the building that served as the Five-O headquarters in the original series. Of course, Caan is familiar with the area, since the current Five-0 headquarters is just across the street, at ali’iolani hale; and production itself is down the road at 605 Kapi’olani blvd.

Scott: I hope that people are more into stuff like this than the procedural part of the show. We get to do episodes like this not often enough. ... If we can get enough people that like the episodes like this as a business model, then CBS can say, 'Oh, OK, this works too.' But CBS has been so successful with the way that they do their shows, it's almost risky for them to do episodes in a procedural show that have nothing to do with cases. ... I hope we can do more like that. ... Anything that has to do with real-life things and not necessarily a case, I invite all that stuff. I understand people like to see cases and like to see them solved. That's the business we're in. But again — I've been saying this for three years — for us, the more fun stuff to do is the other stuff. It's fresh, it's new. How many times can you talk about where the bullet went?

— Scott Caan thrives on pushing boundaries on land and sea There’s no denying it. Scott Caan is a charismatic guy. Even now, at 11 a.m. on a Sunday morning, his one day a week off from the daily rigors of shooting the second season of Hawaii Five-O, he’s on. Lounging on the lanai of his two-story, Mediterranean-style white stucco house nestled on the slopes of Diamond Head, he’s chatting about wrapping up the eighth and final season of Entourage, the HBO show about making it big in Hollywood. At 35, Caan should know a thing or two about Hollywood. He’s lived around the entertainment industry his whole life. It’s the family business. Acting is in his blood. And, if you’ve seen him in such notable films as the Ocean’s Trilogy and Gone in Sixty Seconds, you know it’s true. He’s good. Real good. But, somehow, he doesn’t seem entirely comfortable claiming himself as a bona fide movie star. He refers to “the arts” sarcastically, not pretentiously. And he’s seemingly more at ease with being seen as a regular guy from the neighborhood that can act then a back lot big shot. Beyond acting, he enjoys a variety of personal interests like surfing, skating, bikes and hip-hop, as well as screen writing and photography, which he discovered later on in life. Growing up in LA, he admits to having tough times at home. It was an unconventional upbringing with mom and dad, Sheila Ryan and James Caan. So, at 13, he ended up connecting with some local kids he looked up to and wanted to emulate. “I hung out with kids that I thought were interesting, and they just happened to be hoodlums, B-boys, criminals, skaters and surfers.” During his teen years in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, surfing and skating was on the rise. But it wasn’t cool or commercial yet. In fact, it was mainly for kids from broken homes, derelicts and dropouts who wanted to feel like they belonged. Somewhere. Anywhere. “Back then, it was punk to surf and skate,” affirms Caan. “It was its own little culture. Today, six-year-old girls from [Brentwood] get surfboards for their birthdays. It’s not like it used to be. “Now, skateboarding is so blown out. Surfing is so blown out. Hip-hop is so blown out. It’s a whole different thing. When I was a kid, those were the kind of things you did when you wanted to be anti-establishment. It was your way of saying, ‘Fuck you.’ And I definitely fell into that category.” At the time, Caan recalls that dad was not amused. “My dad was an athlete, and I always played sports when I was younger. Then, when I started surfing, skating, and dancing, my dad was like, ‘What are you doing? You don’t skateboard, there’s no team. You don’t surf, there’s no team. You guys just hang out on the beach.’” But Caan remembers being instantly drawn to it. He felt like he’d found something that suited him. It was his. “I think that it was a combination of being a kid and the people I looked up to, and the people I wanted to be like. I was always an athlete, so I felt like that was the way to go. Also, I wanted to skate and surf, because it was something you did your own way. It was creative self-expression. There are no stats in surfing and skating.” Even though he didn’t understand it, Caan is quick to point out that his dad always tried to be supportive of his son’s alternative interests. “My dad, from when I was a kid, was always like, ‘If you’re going to do something, be fucking good at it. Get after it.’” And, over the course of his life, that’s exactly what Caan’s done. In the process, he’s taken risks, pushed his own limits and tackled new challenges. He admits to continually staying busy in order to keep himself sane. He hates being bored. “I hate simple, the same shit every day. I can’t imagine how I ended up on a T.V. show. You know? Talk about repetitive.” Early on, one thing Caan discovered he had a passion for was rapping alongside Alan Maman (aka The Alchemist). The boys met and hung out even though they went to different schools. Caan was also friends with Maman’s older brother. They all had similar interests in graffiti writing and B-boying. So Caan and Maman got together one day and hatched a plan. “When I met Alan, I was like, ‘Fuck man, let’s try to make a group.’ He said, ‘All right, let’s try it.’” So they started writing rhymes together. After a bit, they felt like they had a routine and were ready to cut a demo. Through a mutual friend, Mike Perretta, better known as Evidence from Dilated Peoples, the guys hooked up with a producer willing to help them out, Quincy Jones Jr. Caan and Maman worked tirelessly with him at his studio, ultimately polishing up their demo, and Jones Jr. started shopping it around. After a chance meeting, Ice Cube was interested and wanted to sign the guys to his label. “I’m in ninth grade and I’m sitting in Ice Cube’s office, and [NWA’s] first album, Straight Outta Compton, was my bible. I was like, ‘This is the fucking coolest thing ever.’” But Caan also remembers that things didn’t quite go according to plan. The two met with Ice Cube about the possibility of working together. Caan was ecstatic. But Maman wasn’t convinced. “Then I remember Alan said, ‘I don’t like this shit. I’m not a hood. I’m from Beverly Hills. You’re going to put me in a hoodie and have me talk about 40 ounces and shit. That ain’t me.’ I was like, ‘Well, who gives a fuck what we’re doing. Let’s go.’ But Alan talked me out of it.” He was like, ‘No, man. Come on, let’s keep it real.’ And I’m like, ‘Fuck, ok, let’s keep it real.’” But their luck turned when they coincidentally met B-Real from Cypress Hill. Instantly, the guys hit it off. They had a lot in common and knew a bunch of the same Venice locals. It felt right. And most importantly, B-Real insisted that they maintain their own identity. The Whooliganz, as they were known, were on their way. “Next thing I know, I’m 16 and on tour with Cypress Hill and House of Pain,” says Caan. “It’s still the best time of my life. They were like family. They took care of us.” While they were over in Europe as roadies, they were slated to perform their first debut single, “Put Your Handz Up” on a talk show in London called “The Word.” Caan describes it as the English version of David Letterman. But the label wanted them to change up their sound to be less like late-’80s hip-hop and more like early ‘90s house music that was emerging at the time. Instead, the guys ditched the show and went to Amsterdam for the weekend. “On Thursday night, we got on a flight to Amsterdam, and didn’t even tell anybody. We just bounced. Alan, Seth Binzer, the lead singer of Crazy Town and I went and just wild out for four days, flew straight home, and when we got home they were like, ‘You’ve been dropped from your record label.’” That was that. Finished. Finito. From there, Maman opted to plunge behind the scenes and pursue his interest in making beats. He’s gone on to become an accomplished hip-hop producer in his own right, working with the likes of Nas, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Ghostface Killah and Snoop Dogg. He’s also continued to support old friends producing for Dilated Peoples, Cypress Hill, Everlast (formerly of House of Pain) and even Crazy Town. Currently, he’s signed to Shady Records and working with Eminem as his DJ. For his part, Caan had no idea what to do next until he got a call — pure luck — about a movie audition for 1995’s A Boy Called Hate. At the time, he had no desire to give up on his lofty hip-hop dreams. But fate had other ideas, and this part was too intriguing to pass up. The story centers on a kid who gets out of juvenile hall and shoots somebody. He goes on a road trip on his motorcycle with a girl, runs away from the law, and ends up saving her from being raped. Caan decided to go for it. “Fuck it, I’m James Dean,” he says. He auditioned a couple of times and finally got the part, beating out a teenage Joaquin Phoenix. While on set, he had an epiphany. “When I was on that movie, I didn’t know if I wanted to be an actor, the guy holding a light, if I wanted to push the dolly, if I wanted to shoot or if I wanted to write it. I was just like, ‘This is home. Whatever this is, whoever these people are, this group of misfits, from the grips to the writers.’ They seemed like my kind of people. I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” From the start, he was hooked on the creative process of filmmaking. “I was really into this mix of humans to make one thing. Everybody’s doing something different to make this one thing, and the whole process, I really fell for that big time. I was like, ‘Oh, ok, this is it.’ I still don’t know what the fuck I want to do, but I know I’m in the right world.” Immediately upon wrapping the movie, he signed up with Playhouse West, a theatre group in North Hollywood that Caan’s mom had studied at years earlier. He wanted to explore what acting was all about. And he wanted to make sure he learned it the right way. His father’s advice about “getting after it” was ringing in his ears. While there, he wrote small scenes for himself and others using a pencil and paper. Finally, on the urging of a friend, he decided to buy a computer and capture a few. Caan and his acting buddies ran some of these homespun scenes by Robert Carnegie, the lead acting coach and mentor of Playhouse West. He liked what he heard and urged Caan to keep going: “Write more.” “So I started writing plays,” says Caan, excited and inspired. “Every Thursday, my mission — there are a bunch of classes at Playhouse West, but Thursday night was the elite class, where you were if you had been there for a couple years, and you hadn’t gotten kicked out, or you hadn’t cried too many times because you were abused, Thursday night was ‘the space.’ It was a lot of good people like Val [Lauren], James Franco, Ashley Judd, Mark Pellegrino, and I. It was a really good group of actors. Every Thursday night, you showed up to battle, and ‘Who’s going to kill it tonight?’ So, my goal was to write something for every Thursday night. I would piece it together, and then we started putting up plays.” Sparked by this experience, Caan was hungry to expand their weekend audience from 150 each night with Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances to 150,000. The only way to do that, he reasoned, was to write a movie. So he fired up his laptop and got to work. During that period, he banged out a couple of scripts. Some of them sold. Some of them didn’t. But one stood out. It was the sсript that became 2003’s Dallas 362. It was a movie Caan wrote in only three weeks but he contends was a big turning point for him. It had to be. It was a movie he wrote, starred and even made his directorial debut in. He was in total control from the start. “I thought, ‘Fuck, if I’m going to make a movie, and I’m going to be the director, I want to write it in a way that I know it’s not going to drive me crazy, and I’ll be able to do it all.’ So I literally wrote this sсript in 20 days. I was like, ‘Here it is.’ And the producer, who had seen one of my plays and read a few of my scripts said, ‘Let’s go.’ He had already raised the million dollars to make it. I couldn’t have been more confident in my life, because I wrote it knowing that I was going to have to shoot it. I knew every shot. I was so prepared.” Due to past movie-making experiences, he also knew exactly what kind of director he wanted to be; the kind that knew what they were doing. “I had been in a lot of movies, and I noticed the best directors were the ones that would walk into a room and go, ‘All right. This is what we’re doing.’ Then I saw other directors that would come and bite their nails and go, ‘Ok, what do you think? What should we do here?’ I decided, ‘Those guys suck, and these guys don’t.’ I knew exactly what every frame of this movie was supposed to be.” “If someone asked me a question, I was like, ‘This, this, and this.’ The producers were like, ‘Wow, man, you’re going to be a great director.’ I hadn’t even done anything. It doesn’t mean that I’m going to be a good director one day. It just meant that I was on top of my shit.” “Still, that movie specifically, there’s a ton of stuff I would have done differently, but I’m super proud of it. I’m super proud of doing everything, and it gave me the confidence to be able to say, ‘Oh, I can totally do this.’ I think that’s a huge thing. I think there are so many people that are talented, but there is part of them that says, ‘You can’t do that.’ The most successful people have a combination of things, and obviously, talent is one of them. But a huge part of it is the confidence to go, ‘Ok, I can do this.’” Talent is golden. But confidence is king. In that respect, Caan admires another ‘80s rapper who’s transformed himself into a credible actor, a producer and now, a big time show runner: Mark Wahlberg. They worked together on Entourage. “He’s a good actor. But look at what he’s done. He’s not Lawrence Olivier, but the dude is like, ‘I can do anything. I can produce this. I can make these shows. I can put these people together. Yes, I’m an actor, and I can show up and hold the gun, and everybody’s impressed by me.’ But he’s a smart dude who says, ‘I can do this, this, and this. Don’t dare me that I can’t make a billion dollars next year. I’ll rap. I’ll be an underwear model. I don’t give a shit.’” He also has similar praise for another well-known colleague who Caan collaborated with on Ocean’s. “Look at George Clooney, too. He’s a talented dude, but he’s also like, ‘What can’t I do? I’m going to do this. I’m going to do that.’ I guarantee that there are a lot of people out there who can do that as well, but a big thing is being able to say, ‘No. I envision this for myself, and I can really do this, that, and the other.’” Caan admires their bravado and seems well on his way to emulating their example with his own string of upcoming projects in the development pipeline. He hints that one is teaming up with his dad. His accomplishments on Dallas gave Caan the confidence to branch out and test himself creatively. After the movie wrapped, he discovered that he had a passion for photography. It all came about through working with Phil Parmet, his director of photography. During the movie the two became friends and Parmet taught Caan how to handle a camera. “I’d gotten a camera that year as a gift,” remembers Caan. “He said, ‘I used to shoot with this camera.’ So he taught me about shutter speeds, f-stops, composition, and why he shoots the way he shoots. The preparation for that movie was like school for me. By the time the movie started shooting, in that two-month period, I went from not even wanting to pay attention to cameras, to, ‘Phil, I think, can we be here instead?’ He would smile, and he saw that I’d gotten the bug.” Smiling, Caan recalls becoming totally obsessed with clicking away and capturing the moment. “I was shooting and shooting. I was taking more pictures than anything else. I wanted to travel to shoot photos. Someone said, ‘Let’s have a birthday party for you this year.’ I’m like, ‘All right, well, I’m going to show some of these photos that I shot.’” And that’s exactly what he did. In 2004, he did a one-man show for his birthday at his friend’s menswear store called Kingsbury in LA. For his debut, he only showed ten prints. But a few of them sold and that inspired him to keep shooting. Next year, he returned with 20 prints. He did it for five years in a row. Shoot. Print. Show. Repeat. His goal, every year, was to come up with a bigger and better show of new photographs. Finally, in 2009, he collected his best images together in a coffee table book called Scott Caan Photographs Vol. 1. “The last party I had was the book opening on my birthday,” he says proudly. “I haven’t really shot any photos in about a year and a half, but it’s because I’m on this show.” The secret to his obsession with photography lies in its purity and its permanence. “To me, photography is one of my favorite things because I don’t give a shit about what it’s supposed to look like. When you write something, 30 people are going to give you their opinions, and then you have to rewrite it. You direct something and everybody has an opinion. You produce something, it’s even worse. As an actor, you have a director telling you how to do it. Me, and that thing [the camera], we’re just out there doing it. If I see a photo, and I like the way it looks, I’m going to print it. “Then, of course, someone goes, ‘Oh, I like this one. I don’t like this one.’ But they don’t change. You can’t change a photo. It’s like, ‘That’s what I took. If you don’t like it, I’m sorry.’” Then the conversation swerves toward motorcycles, a love affair Caan’s had since his rebellious teenage years riding dirt bikes. And let’s face it. Who doesn’t love to look cool like James Dean or Paul Newman blazing down the highway? “If I really loved bikes, then I should get a Ducati and do 120 around turns. But I like doing a burnout with a suicide shift and doing beelines through traffic because it makes me feel like I’m Dallas from The Outsiders. Those are just the kind of people I looked up to.” At the moment, Caan’s cherished 1960 Panhead, a bike he’s had for six years, is in the shop. Another buddy from high school, Yaniv Evan from Powerplant Choppers, is working on it and fixing his brakes. Chuckling, Caan launches into the ongoing repair saga that is this bike. “I called him up, ‘Yaniv, this back brake doesn’t work.’ The front brake is irrelevant. It’s a suicide shift with a back brake that’s not working. ‘It’s a death trap.’ “He said, ‘Well, what do you mean they don’t work?’ I’m like, ‘Dude, I’m telling you, the rear brake does not work.’ He said, ‘All right.’ So, I drive the bike over to him. Then I get a phone call that night at 1 a.m. ‘What’s up, dude?’ He said, ‘I’m in the hospital.’ ‘What happened?’ I said. ‘I crashed your bike. The fucking brakes don’t work.’ "But he wasn’t kidding,” Caan says, pausing for comedic effect. “It was as if he was giving me new information that I didn’t know about.” Like his passion for vintage bikes, Caan also has the same fascination with surfing. He enjoys riding all kinds of exotic, one-of-a-kind boards. Sometimes, it’s just to get a reaction in the water. “I ride Alaia, and weird boards all the time. I love the feeling, but I also love people going, ‘Holy shit. He’s riding a piece of wood.’ There’s something about the show-off side of surfing and skating. It’s not as fun if someone didn’t see you do it.” Later, we round up the troops, including his girlfriend, grab some surfboards from his storage unit in the garage, and walk a few blocks down to the beach. On the way to Tongs, a local surf break, a car driving by slows to a crawl, obviously recognizing the actor. A camera pops out on the driver’s side and starts taking photos while the passenger yells out, “We love you, man.” “Thanks,” says Caan, turning around. He graciously stops on the sidewalk and poses for a few candid shots with his Alaia, a traditional Hawaiian wooden surfboard in one hand and a casual shaka in the other. He’s polite, giving them a story and a memory to share with friends and neighbors. After a minute or so, he walks on. “You’re one of us,” gushes the guy from the car, encouraged by Caan’s graciousness. He’s referring to the fact that because of the show, locals here on the islands have claimed Caan as one of their own. He’s now a member of the ohana in the same way original Five-0 actors Jack Lord and James MacArthur were before him. “God bless,” Caan calls back as the car speeds off. He hangs a left down the public access alleyway towards the surf. At the end, he jumps into the water and paddles out toward the outer reef break and the clear blue horizon.

Some celebrities speak out for their favorite charity. Some prefer to pay out. Actor Scott Caan, currently starring in the CBS series Hawaii Five-O, paddles out. For the last several years the LA native and longtime surfer has been lending a hand to two different organizations that use surfing to help people improve their quality of life. The Life Rolls On foundation runs regular "They Will Surf Again" events to help surfers of all ages affected by spinal-cord injuries get back in the water, while Surfers Healing, founded by surfing's famous Paskowitz family, uses the sport to help kids with autism. How did you first get involved with Life Rolls On and Surfers Healing? SCOTT CAAN: I started out helping with Surfers Healing events, doing five or six events a year at Topanga and Malibu, and working with a bunch of kids there. And then one day I was at Malibu and I met Jesse [Billauer, founder and director of national outreach of Life Rolls On] at one of his events, and I think they were short a guy that day, so I just jumped out there and started helping, and I've been doing it since then. How do these two organizations differ? SC: With Life Rolls On, it's guys and women who were surfers before their injuries who didn't think they'd ever be able to do what they love again. With Surfers Healing, you're helping kids with autism, many of whom are surfing for the first time. I've had kids who would kick and scream when we're paddling out there. One was scratching my face and trying to choke me. We get one wave and he goes completely calm and just points back out to the water for one more. What's it like to take people surfing who aren't able to paddle out on their own? SC: Honestly, it's almost a selfish thing, because the joy you get out of helping someone do something they can't do without you is second to none. It's one thing to donate money or support a cause, but to be the person who's actually physically helping someone is amazing. How do you feel surfing helps someone with a spinal-cord injury deal with his or her situation? SC: For them to be able to get back in the water and do what they love, I think it's the biggest stoke they have. I know what it's like to not be able to get in the water—after a couple of weeks I start to go nuts. I can't imagine what it would be like to say, "I can't go unless some dude helps me." How did it feel to be honored by Life Rolls On? SC: They gave me an award for almost drowning Jesse about five times. [Laughs] I hate to sound clichéd but to get an award for doing something that's so rewarding is kind of a goofy thing. I feel like I'm rewarded just for getting to hang out with these guys who have so much heart and so many other qualities I admire. Have you become close with the people you've met through these organizations? SC: These are dudes I surf with all the time. When I'm in Hawaii, I miss surfing with my friends Jesse and Nathan. When you go home and think about it, it becomes an amazing spiritual experience, but when you're out there, you're just surfing with your boys, and one of them just can't stand up and you're helping him out. What would you say to someone considering volunteering at one of these events? SC: To be the person actually physically doing it, helping someone [in the water] is amazing—but it's something not everybody can do. You have to be confident in the water, know what you're doing, and know you have a life in your hands. At the end of the day, I'm more grateful to be a part of this than just about anything I have. It's hard to talk about [it] and not be completely humbled. If you know how to surf or you can swim and you get a kick out of helping people, then I can't imagine any better day.
